Built-ins are worth reading carefully before anything gets opened up: a lot of what presents as a sealed-system failure is airflow, a fan or a drain. Ask what was measured before you agree to a compressor.
- A condenser breathing a film of salt air or canyon dust, with a fan that has slowed. The unit runs and runs because it cannot shed heat, and cleaning it out fixes what looks like a dying compressor.
- A defrost drain silted up where it leaves the cabinet — that is the water under the crisper drawers, not a leak in the door.
- A defrost heater or sensor failed open, so frost keeps rebuilding however often you empty the compartment.
- An inlet valve barely opening, which is what hollow and half-size ice cubes usually mean, sometimes with a filter nobody has changed since the kitchen was built.

Every line is a range because two appliances reach the same symptom by different routes. A burner that will not catch can be an electrode to clean or a spark module to replace, and the meter decides which before anybody quotes.

Outdoors as well
An outdoor-rated refrigerator or refrigerated drawer set into a stone island is a different animal from a column indoors: it sheds its heat through a grille in the cabinetry rather than into a room, and the cabinet has to keep breathing for it to hold temperature at all.
